• How to Judge and Improve Teaching and Learning

... in Primary, Secondary and Special Schools, PRUs and Units

This course is written particularly for headteachers, deputy headteachers, senior leaders and managers, especially those who are responsible for direct observation of lessons as part of judging teachers' performance. It will be very valuable for all senior staff and will help to judge, record and improve the quality of learning and teaching. It will refer directly to the latest Ofsted criteria and will have a specific slant on including all learners, especially those with special needs.

This course will:

• Help you to be clear about the national criteria for judging the quality of learning and teaching.
• Explain the most effective processes involved.
• Help you and your staff to prepare for Ofsted and other inspections.
• Explain how to link the judgement on pupil learning with why it is effective and how to record this efficiently.
• Give specific guidance on how to give verbal feedback following direct observations.
• Help to provide summary reports as part of the school's self-evaluation processes, identifying areas of strength and those requiring further development linked to the school/PRU improvement and development process.

All course members will receive a course file containing:

• Training materials used on the day, including overheads to be used afterwards.
• A variety of formats and prompt sheets to use when observing lessons.
• Suggested format for annual reporting of teaching and learning to governors/owners/inspectors.
• Guidance notes for feedback to staff.
• Sample proformas that are used by inspectors.
• Useful references and contacts.
